There are a number of verses in the Qurʾān which are related to horses, such as Q 3: 14 (‘fine branded horses’); 8: 60 (‘steeds of war’); 16: 8 (‘And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment’); 38: 31 (‘Behold, there were brought before him, at eventide coursers of the highest breeding, and swift of foot’); and 59: 6 (‘You [believers] did not have to spur on your horses or camels for whatever gains God turned over to His messenger from them’). The Prophet Muḥammad himself had two named horses, Murtajiz and Sakab, as well as two mules, Duldul and Shahbāʾ. He also rode the miraculous steed Burāq, which is variously described as a horse or an indeterminate beast akin to a mule or an ass, on which the Prophet undertook his miʿrāj or night-journey from Mecca to Jerusalem.
